3 tips for finding the right career for you

3 tips for finding the right career for you 1

Go to university, get a degree, get a job in your field, and live happily ever after, right?

Sadly, none of these things are a given. And in the world of work, many people don’t even use their degree and end up in careers completely unrelated to their area of expertise

This isn’t always a bad thing, as it means you’re not restricted by your eighteen-year-old study selections.

But with no guarantee you’ll end up in the industry of your dreams right away, it can be difficult to decide where to go once you leave university and enter the workplace – or even if you’re a mid-life career changer looking to switch it up

Whatever your circumstances, these are just three tips for finding your dream career no matter your experience.

  1. Consider your expertise

When it comes to the world of work, many of us don’t use our degrees.

But it never hurts to further your education. And if you have expertise in a certain area through your work experience, study may be able to take your career to the next level.

Take ARU Distance Learning for example – their Healthcare Management MSc prioritises the experience of students in the field of healthcare over formal industry qualifications. If you want to get ahead in your career, your experience may count for more than you’d expect when it comes to studying for that next stepping stone.

  1. Get networking

There’s no more powerful tool in the job market than nepotism.

And there’s no better way to break into a new industry than on the recommendation of a friend. Not only can they use their sway to get you to where you want to be, they’ll be totally honest with you about what to expect from the role and are likely to have no problem giving you a helping hand with the necessary development.

Get to know people in your industry through virtual and real-world events and platforms like LinkedIn. Meeting new people is useful not just in terms of valuable connections, but when it comes to boosting your personal confidence too – this will give you a major boost in interview situations.

  1. Put satisfaction first

The worst thing you can do is choose a career that comprises your fulfilment.

Whilst it’s something we’ve all done at one time or another just to bring in a pay check, no one puts in all that hard work studying to end up with a job they despise.

Unfortunately, finding a job you love is easier said than done. But there’s no point in flogging a dead horse – when you start to feel those warning signs that the job you once adored is beginning to feel a little stale, get looking!

Above all else, the most important thing you can get out of a job is satisfaction, so don’t be afraid to reach for the role you really want.

Struggling to find your dream job? Hopefully these three tips provide a little guidance.
