The Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is a 3 year program that combines scholarly research, critical analysis and reflection with practical teaching skill development. Student teachers are supported in their growing knowledge of multiple perspectives of early childhood teaching, learning, curriculum and assessment. The program empowers student teachers to practice with confidence, valuing biculturalism within our diverse NZ socio-cultural context as early childhood educators.
The first year introduces students to early childhood research culture. Topics of study include: human development; research; learning through play and the different cultures in New Zealand.
Stage two builds on the first year of study. Topics include: writing and research in early childhood; the family; the philosophical underpinnings of early childhood education; and curriculum studies.
The final year helps develop advanced skills and knowledge in the areas of early childhood education that students have developed in the first two years of study. Students will also study new areas including, leadership in early childhood education; issues and trends in early childhood; and conducting research.
