Value of a Russian MBBS degree
The Russian MBBS degree is globally recognized and validated by a number of international bodies which includes-
- World Health Organization (WHO) in their "World Directory of Medical schools"
This listing allows a medical student to apply for any licensure exam in a country including the Medical Council of India Screening exam to register his degree.
- The International Medical Education Directory (IMED)
IMEAD is responsible for providing accurate and up-to-date information about international medical schools that are recognized by the appropriate government agency (Ministry of Health) in the countries where the medical schools are located.
- ECFMG, USA
The doctors qualifying from the WHO recognized medical universities are eligible to appear for USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam) in Moscow or other centers around the world.
- General Medical Council (UK)
GMC recognizes the MBBS degree awarded by Russian Universities listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) directory of medical schools. Medical graduates from these Russian universities listed are therefore eligible for registration with the GMC and can appear for the PLAB (the licensing examination for overseas doctors) in UK.
- European Union
As Russia is a signatory of the Bologna convention, all medical degrees awarded by Russian Universities are considered as equivalent and are valid throughout the European Union.
Courses on offer:
Undergraduate programs (MBBS)
Russian medical universities offer both undergraduate as well as postgraduate level programs and IFSC offers complete admission and counseling services to Indian students interested in pursuing their medical studies from Russia.
The undergraduate medical course leading to a "MD Physician" degree has now been accepted as the equivalent to the MBBS degree offered in India. International students are given the option to choose their medium of instruction - English, French or Russian.
Undergraduate programs in English or French medium have a six years duration which includes one year of practical training. The Russian medium has a longer duration of seven years. This is because the first year is considered to be "Preparatory Faculty" where students will study the Russian language before proceeding to do the main course of six years duration.
Although international students opting for studies in the English medium do not need to undergo the preparatory faculty of one year in the Russian language before starting their main medical course, they are taught the Russian language during the course of the program. This is because working knowledge of Russian becomes extremely crucial when they start their practical training in hospitals and clinics.
Postgraduate programs (MD)
Russian postgraduate clinical training leading to a post graduate degree is for three years and is offered in English, French and Russian medium. International students having medical or dental qualification equivalent to MBBS level are eligible to apply for MS/MD programs from Russian medical universities. For admission purpose, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation requires that all original documents be "apostiled" in India by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi and IFSC aids students in this process. As Russia is a signatory of the Bologna convention, post graduate degree conferred by its medical universities are recognized as equivalent to the ones awarded by other European countries.
Indian students who do not fulfill the entry requirement into the post graduate programs can take recourse of a bridging program along with their post graduate education at no extra cost. The best part about this option is that the total duration for the post graduate education inclusive of the three month Russian language course and bridging program remains the same - three years only.
