‘Carbon footprint’ is the latest buzzword in the world today and several countries and corporate companies are taking involved measures to reduce their carbon footprint on the environment and earn carbon credits as a barometer of social responsibility. This awareness is a result of study, accumulation and sharing of knowledge in the sphere of environment science and has opened up several avenues for research and application. The study of environment engineering involves criss-crossing multiple disciplines including civil and chemical engineering, and subjects like air and water quality, water supply, waste water, solid waste disposal, hazardous waste management, storm water management etc, are covered extensively. Being a specialised field, undergraduate programme are rarely offered. The IITs offer a four-year engineering course in the subject at the Bachelor’s level.

School of Process, Environmental & Materials Engineering (SPEME), University of Leeds

The School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering or SPEME as it’s called, is one of the largest integrated engineering schools in Europe encompassing study of multiple streams of engineering including Aviation Technology, Materials and Process Engineering. It is a unique blend of education, research and knowledge transfer and has been rated highly by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Run at a commercial scale, the School earned £9 million through knowledge transfer activities. Large investments have been made to facilitate industry-standard research activities. The School offers a taught programme in Energy and Environment leading to an MSc degree. The course enables students from various engineering and science backgrounds to gain knowledge and training in emerging streams like energy technology, waste recycling, pollution studies, and fire and explosion protection, equipping them to seek solutions for future energy demands, climate change and global warming, and frame energy and pollution policy. Compulsory modules include Pollution Sampling and Analysis, Atmospheric Processes and a research project under the guidance of a supervisor. The Environmental Engineering Research Centre at Queen's University is one of three research clusters at the School of Planning, Architecture & Civil Engineering, and has established a name for itself globally for its integrated multi-disciplinary research activities. Current projects at this award-winning centre include study of Classical and Applied Geotechnical Engineering, Coastal Engineering and Marine Renewable, Contaminated Land and Groundwater Remediation, Environmental Forensics, Crime & Human Health, Hydrogeology and Geophysics, and Water Quality and Environmental Tracers. Post graduate programmes offered at the centre include MEng in Environmental & Civil Engineering, MSc/PGDip in Environmental Engineering, MSc/PGDip in Environmental Forensics and MSc/PGDip in Water Resources Management.
