Undoubtedly medicine is a profession of utmost respect and nobility. Every year, thousands of science students aspiring to be a medical doctor burn their night lamps to clear medical entrance exams. But only few are able to make it due to less seats and extremely tough competition.

Those who do not clear entrance test either give another try year after other or choose to drop their dream of becoming a doctor. While some also opt for medicine degree from abroad, this can be rewarding yet expensive and include a lot of tests and hurdles to be cleared to finally get admission. So for most of the aspirants a medical degree becomes a distant dream.

But not loosing hopes, you can still become a medicine graduate and a practicing doctor. There is a comparatively easier and much cost effective way to go through and achieve a valid medical degree from abroad.

In India, after 10+2 students have to appear for entrance test like PMT, CBSE or AFMC etc to get admission into about five-year graduate programme of MBBS. These entrance tests are hard to clear and generally students end up taking two to four attempts to get through. Even if you choose to take admission in any private college in India that too would cost approximate Rs 30-40 Lac, thus being an expensive proposition.

Alternatively there is another route of pursuing MBBS, from a recognised Medical University in any of the European countries (excluding the UK) or China, which will be cheaper and easy to enter. After successfully completing MBBS from abroad you have to appear for the Screening Test in India conducted by the MCI to obtain a licensure to practice medicine in the country. This will be followed by a one-year residency programme.And you become a full-fledged practising doctor. The MBBS degree from these countries are also valid in US and UK.

Also, since some of the EU medical universities have the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). This system enables you to take easy transfer to universities within the EU. The courses studied at such institutions are recognised at universities in other EU countries, as are the credit points.

Where & How

Nations such as China, Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Belarus and few others have universities which offer MBBS graduate programme and have rankings in WHO and Medical Council of India (MCI) recognised list of colleges. The tuition fee is much lesser than what medical students spend in studying in US, UK or private medical colleges of India. The cost of living is about 50% less than what it is in US or UK. Added to this, the admission to these universities is direct after 10+2 without any entrance examination.

All these universities have a summer and winter break provision in which international students can visit their home country.

Russia: Russian Medical Education is considered to be one of the most advanced one. The Russian medical degrees have good WHO and UNESCO ranking and have got global recognition. In the world ranking about 30 positions are occupied by the Russian Medical Universities. Its medical universities are well equipped and offer broad exposure to clinical practice due to its well equipped multi-profile hospitals. Compared to western countries, course fee and cost of living in Russian institutions are much less. It has an easy admission process and no entrance test. The medium of education is both Russian and English language.

Slovakia: There are many medical universities in Slovakia which offer general medicine and dentistry programme to international students. Both General M edicine and Dental programmes are available for international students with a good command of English. The Faculty of Medicine is closely connected with the Teaching Hospitals in which practical education in clinical disciplines is carried out. Graduates are awarded the academic title ‘Doctor of General Medicine’ (MD) or ‘Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

Duration: 6 years (MBBS) & 5-6 years (BDS)

Tuition Fee- Rs 4.25 Lac-Rs 4.86 Lac per year (depending upon Univesity)

Poland: Since Poland is a member of EU, your MBBS degree will be accepted by all EU countries, without any exams or tests. GDSK is its largest university recognised by US Ministry of Education.

China: There are around 150 medical Universities/Colleges in China. China Universities are very economical cost wise and reputed in technology wise. China offers practically all specialisations known to mankind. Universities in China have large number of international students.

The China Medical Universities are in the WHO's Directory of World Medical Schools‘ which enables a student graduating from such University eligible to appear for many of the screening tests like the USMLE, PLAB and Test by the MCI. Also is the provision for international medical students to do their internship in home country or China. The country has both Chinese and English as teaching medium for foreign students. International students have to undergo atleast six months Chinese language programme training.

Duration: 4.5 years (MBBS) & 4 years (BDS)

Tuition Fee- Rs 95,120- Rs 2.3 Lac per year (depending upon Univesity)


According to the Medical Council of India (MCI) there are two basic eligibility criteria to take admission in any foreign Medical University.

  • Minimum age 17 years by the end of the year (31st Dec)
  • Passed 10+2 or equivalent or higher qualification with min 50% to 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (40% in PCB for SC/ST/OBC) depending on the university


Very Economical: The MBBS degree from European nations and China costs even less than the 50% of the cost in the US and UK. The US four years MD programme course (equivalent to MBBS) cost around Rs 80 Lac-Rs 90 Lac. This excludes four years of Pre-Med study. While a student can complete an MBBS course from any of the European nations (excluding the UK) or China in just Rs 12 Lac-Rs 29 Lac.

ECTS: Medical University in Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic & Hungary have Europeon Credit Transfer System (ECTS) & Europeon Community Programme - SOCRATES / ERASMUS. Under these programmes students can migrate from one country's University to another country's University with in European Union during the tenure of their course.

Degree valid in US, UK & India: The degrees obtained from EU nations - Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary are directly valid in California (USA), Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy, India, Norway, Greece, Holland, Ireland and others EU countries.

MBBS students from these countries are eligible to appear for the screening tests like USMLE, PLAB and MCI’s Screening Test of India. After clearing these screening tests you can easily practice medicine in the respective countries.

Easy Entry: Unlike India or US there is no Entrance Test for admission to MBBS programme. Admission is on the basis of merit.

Shorter Duration: The duration of MBBS course from EU countries or China is about 4.5 years to six years after 10+2 as compared to US, UK where it takes about eight years after 10+2.
