Founded in 1911, the Department of Electrical Technology has evolved into an integrated centre with four departments catering to the needs of almost 500 students working on post-graduate programs and another 100 on doctoral degrees.

The department has conducted several research projects of particular relevance to organisations like the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). A Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics, which functions directly under the department focuses on research and education in fields like nano electronics, bio electrical and electronics and integrated scale manufacturing systems.

The department offers Master’s programs in Electrical Engineering, System Science and Automation, and Signal Processing, each comprising four semesters over duration of two years. Admissions to the respective courses are made on the basis of GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores in papers corresponding to the core department. A student applying for the Master’s program should normally have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in the relevant discipline.

GATE exam is normally conducted in February and the score obtained in the current exam is valid for two years. Students in the final semester can also apply, provided they furnish all the relevant documents pertaining to their course completion during their admission to the Master’s program.
